Lastly’s Leaders

Hi, my name is Shelby Lastly (S. Lastly) and I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher this year. This will be my 8th year teaching kindergarten. I grew up in Burnet and graduated from Burnet High School in 2011. After high school, I attended Abilene Christian University, Go Wildcats, and graduated in 2015 with a degree in elementary education (EC-6). I taught kindergarten in Abilene my first 3 years of teaching. I loved teaching in Abilene, but decided it was time to come back home. This will be my 5th year at Shady Grove Elementary. I am looking forward to a fantastic year with your child. Together we can! J

Reading Homework!
Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night your child will bring home two or more books. On their homework bag is a warm up activity. Do the warm up activity with at least one book. I hope that together you and your child will read and talk about the books in 3 different ways:

*Your child may tell or make up the story by "reading" the pictures. Talking about what he/she sees in the pictures develops important language and pre-reading skills.

*If your child is ready, he/she may read the words. In kindergarten, this mostly means matching the first letter sound with a word that matches the picture. (We do not ask beginning readers to "sound out" words. That comes later.)

*You may read books to your child. Parents reading to their children is one of the most powerful things in the world for creating successful readers.
